Myth 02: My kid will miss out.
We have been brought up to believe our education system has set our children up for success with opportunities and experiences they wont find anywhere else. But that is so far from the truth! Consider these famous homeschooled athletes in our world today: Tim Tebow, Serena and Venus Williams, Bethany Hamilton, Blake Griffin. They didn't go through a regular education system to get to where they are today! Some were homeschooled by their parents, and others were homeschooled in a pod. Putting your children in a Homeschool pod will ensure they aren't isolated while still able to focus on the things they are passionate and gifted in, rather than wasting too many hours in an 8hr school day.
So what exactly will our kids miss out on? Some have concerns about their kids not going through the graduation experience or Homecoming and Prom. Whatever your concerns are for missing out on an experience you enjoyed, why can't we create new ones for them? Why is it so important to try to protect our experiences for our children? This is an influence of the system; to repeat within the lines and don't think outside the box.
While kids in the education system are waiting and wasting time their last year in classrooms for time to go by so they can finally graduate and walk down the aisle for 30 seconds, why not recreate a graduation experience they will never forget! Identify their passions and recreate that for them with people who genuinely want to see them succeed. Because graduation is like everything in life—celebrating your wins! Let's teach this early so they learn to reward hard work and not give up. Walking down an aisle isn't the memorable part of graduation, its being recognized and celebrated for completing something that was hard.
So your kids may not have all the same memories as you...but is that "missing out?" Or is that a unique experience everyone can create for themselves, while accomplishing the core goal behind it all. Find love, celebrate wins, reward hard work, pursue passions and dreams...and do all this with little to no regrets!
